re: Summer 2008 update

I have had such a busy year, and know that I have neglected my log on this website. I shall now share one of the highlights for me the past few months.
Going back to April of this year 2008, I was named the first recipient of the Millie Santillanes Education Award, given by the New Mexican Hispanic Culture Preservation League headquartered in Alburquerque. It was quite an honor for me to be recognized by this organization. Because I have been very active the past ten years promoting our Spanish history and culture to children (mainly through my own original musical and dramatic presentations) in my community of Santa Fe, I was chosen for this award. Much to my surprise, part of the award included a handpainted retablo of San Antonio de Padua, Patron Saint of Los Sauces. I asked the members of the award committee if they had any idea that San Antonio had such special significance to me. They were quite surprised to hear that this particular saint had importance to my mother's village. I told them how devoted my mother was to this saint. They said it was "purely coincidental." It was, however, to me a sign from above that my mother was there in spirit with me on that very special event. It was quite heartwarming.
