Los Sauces website finally a reality!

I am happy to be able to say that the website for our book is finally a reality. I only wish my mother were alive to see this. It has been a bittersweet experience for me to be doing book promotion without her. We had worked so hard together on our project for about six years, only to have her pass away soon after the book's release. I am thankful that the project was done, and that I got to see her take great satisfaction in knowing that it was completed in her lifetime.

I believe she had a sense that she was leaving behind a valuable legacy through this book.

Though Los Sauces is still an active community today, it has changed some from the days of my mother's youth there. The school has long been closed, the two general stores are no longer, and several homes are now vacant or abandoned. Of the two dance halls, only the shell of one remains. By contrast, some new and modern homes have been built in the village. New residents have moved in as well as descendants of former residents. Satellite dishes are a common sight. Los Sauces, now with about half as many inhabitants, is still a viable community.

Whereas it once was a strictly Spanish-speaking community, today English is the primary language. Some villagers still speak Spanish, but this language is not heard in the Los Sauces today to the same degree as it once was.

In choosing images for the photo album, I decided to include many scenes from the countryside and some of the vacant adobe structures that once were inhabited or used in days gone by. The mansion at the Cross Arrow Ranch is still an interesting landmark today in Los Sauces, as it has been in the past. Through the images I hope to trigger your imagination as to what the village was once like as in the days depicted in "Life in Los Sauces."

I would be pleased to have you sign the guestbook. I would love to know who all has taken a "virtual" tour of Los Sauces, Colorado, USA. Also, please pass along the website address to others you know who might be interested.

The upcoming Día de San Antonio celebration is set for June 16, 2007. I plan to relay relevant information on this website for those of you interested in coming to the event this year.
