A Busy Day in the San Luis Valley
13/04/07 21:48
At the invitation of the Adobe de Oro Concilio de
Arte in Alamosa, I spent April 4, 2007 in the San
Luis Valley promoting our book, "Life in Los Sauces."
I started out by speaking in the morning to Aaron
Abeyta's creative writing class at Adams State
College. I even brought some old fashioned homemade
toys ( "Run-Runs") made from large buttons and string
for the students to try. This simple toy was typical
of the ones that my mother used to play with as a
child in Los Sauces. I also shared a Powerpoint slide
show presentation.
At noon I was the tour guide for a group of individuals from the college and the president of the Adobe
de Oro Concilio. We made a trip to the village of Los Sauces. The weather cooperated beautifully, and we
spent a delightful four and a half hours together as we traveled throughout the village. While there we were able to speak to some of the local villagers as well.
In the evening I spoke again to a group of people from the San Luis Valley who came to hear and see my presentation. I was even able to show a video clip of my mother, Olivama, sharing some of the very things
that she included in the book. The day closed out with the book signing.
All in all, it was a wonderful time for me back in the San Luis Valley. I was able to renew old ties, and make new ones as well.
